Just two blocks off lower Broadway in the Fifth Avenue Historic District away from the wildness of Honky Tonk Highway is The Standard Proof Whiskey Co. A small but mighty local gem making waves in the whiskey world, racking up several gold and platinum medals at the San Francisco Spirits Competition along its journey. This bottling and tasting room is housed in an old 1800’s brick building that used to be home to a corset making company. As soon as you step in the front door you are met with a speakeasy style room with a large bar inviting you to sit down. A neon light shines brightly above with the words “Born Behind the Bar”, which is where this company’s story begins.

Robert, an experienced bartender and bar manager of the Josephine and now Creative Director of Standard Proof, was looking to offer an after dinner sipper for his guests and friends alike. He started playing with rye whiskey, coffee beans, honey and vanilla, giving birth to The Red Eye Rye, the coffee infused rye whiskey that started it all.

Standard Proof prides itself on two things, first being that this idea was “born behind the bar”, not in some big company “think tank”. Secondly, and equally as important, is that these rye whiskeys are infused, not flavored, a detail that might sound small to some but has a large impact on the tasting notes of the products created. Rye whiskey, opposed to bourbons or other types of whiskey, allows the flavor of the infused ingredients to shine through without taking away from the distinct flavor of the rye whiskey that so many enjoy. A vital part is picking the right rye whiskey to use based on what it is infusing it with; might it be ginger, pecan, pineapple or mint just to name a few. Next the rye whiskey is infused with only the finest natural ingredients, in other words they leave out that artificial hangover inducing sugar filled fake syrup that you will find in most flavor liquors. The final product is then bottled by hand in downtown Nashville where you can sip on a cocktail or buy a bottle, or two. All of these small details have attracted whiskey aficionados from all over as well as sparking the interest of those just entering the world of whiskey.

The team of very talented bartenders don’t just serve up some of Nashville’s best cocktails featuring Standard Proof products but also offer cocktail classes to educate and entertain private groups as well as the public. During your hour long class you will immerse yourself in whiskey 101 and what it takes to create an exceptional cocktail, a craft that is more of an art then anything else. Afterwards you can either purchase a bottle on sight or have one shipped so you can show off your new set of bartending skills with a quality product. Check out www.standardproofwhiskey.com to see when upcoming classes are being held, and book yourself a seat.

So whenever lower Broadway is feeling a bit much, venture just a couple of blocks to The Standard Proof Whiskey Co, cool off with a WildFlower Lemonade made with Honeysuckle Rye Whiskey, try a spin on a classic with Pecan Old Fashioned, or sip on what I consider the best Espresso Martini in town, made with Red Eye Rye, the inspiration loved by locals and bartenders.
